This is a question i saw posted on another forum...Do you think Christians should enjoy the pleasures of the world such as amusement parks, restaurants, plays, movies, or sporting events? Or should we hold ourselves completely apart from all of it?

Karen,
Grace and peace to you...

I have no problem with enjoying the various pleasures of the world with three caveats.

1) The pleasure should not be immoral itself (i.e. drugs, pornography, drunkeness).
2) The pleasure should never be allowed to get in the way of the relationship with God.
3) If the pleasure will cause another to stumble, even though it doesn't violate the previous two, it should be avoided. (see Romans 14)

For example on #3. I don't have any problem with someone drinking a beer. But if I decide to drink one, I will make sure I am with people who will not be offended by my drink. I definitely would not drink in front of a recovering alcoholic, for instance. I do not want to play a part in causing them to stumble.

BTW, I don't drink, but am not offended when a Christian does, moderately.

We Christians should be displaying in our life the truth of having a more abundant life then those who are not saved. Jesus gave us life, and life abundant.

The Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit

When the "pleasures" are against the
teachings of God, then as you know,
we forego them, as they in the end
would not be "pleasures" at all.

And do you consider, for example, going to a baseball game a forbidden pleasure? The idea put forth was that if it was pleasurable at all it was unholy.

*smiles* they were saying that absolutely everything you could enjoy was a sin. I dont think so either, but i thought it might stimulate some conversation.

Well, that's something new. Never have
heard anyone say that everything is a
sin.

That's a concept taught by some...it originated in the very early apostate church as I recall offhand. Some old European denominations taught this and was part of the Puritanical thought of the early colonies.

If it was enjoyable, then it was carnal...thus...a sin.

Just another of Satan's lies.

I forgot the name... "Manicheism" maybe???

There are very few legitimate pleasures in this world and the requirments of those that do exist are so difficult that they are not worth it.

Interesting!

Why do you conclude that?

For instance isnt Prayer a pleasure, and fellowship , and worship music and Bible study, and Sunsets and Sunrises, and walks, climbs you name it, if God is a part of it them=n it is fun and interesting.

God Bless You,

David

The things you listed are to a certain degree pleasurable but the word of God judges motives and desires to the point where its not only what you do but why you do it and that is a hard test indeed, most of the time i dont pass and therefore cannot realy enjoy anything.

Hi Strings....

Gee, you seem a little hard on youreslf about enjoying what God has given us to enjoy....no strings attached. ( a litle pun ;0) Truly, if you think about creation, God designed it for our delight....it serves little purpose to us except for viewing pleasure! The stars, sunsets, the ocean, laughter, love, etc. are God's creation gifts to us. I love looking up into the stars and telling God how beautiful a night sky is and thanking Him for creating such splendor. I thank Him for the pure pleasure of a baby's smiles and my families hugs. All of these are good gifts from God..no right motive or desire is required to partake and enjoy them.

Amen to that! Whats the point of it all when not viewed with love? Being depressed all the time is nothing but a waste of time, and it is not the way to get to God! View the world through the eyes of a child, it is almost the easiest thing in the world to do!
